Shiga-Kusatsu Kogen Route Fully Reopens: Direct Access to Kusatsu Onsen and Spectacular Scenic Drives Resume

National Route 292, known as the Shiga-Kusatsu Kogen Route, which had been closed for the winter season, fully reopened on May 29, 2026. Travelers can once again drive directly from Shiga Kogen to Kusatsu Onsen and enjoy a spectacular highland route along ridgelines reaching over 2,000 meters in elevation.

According to an announcement by the Shiga Kogen Tourism Association, National Route 292, the Shiga-Kusatsu Kogen Route — from the Yosaka Gate in Shiga Kogen to the Tenguyama Gate in Kusatsu, Gunma Prefecture — fully reopened from 1:00 p.m. on May 29, 2026. This makes it possible to travel directly by car from the Shiga Kogen side to Kusatsu Onsen.

This route includes the highest point on Japan’s national road network, at an elevation of 2,172 meters, and is popular as an exhilarating scenic drive that feels as if you are traveling above the clouds. From fresh greenery to autumn foliage, dramatic views that change with the seasons await along the way.
