At the summit of Higashitateyama, reached via the Shiga Kogen Golden Line, you will find the Higashitateyama Alpine Botanical Garden, a “flower field in the sky” with free admission. Alpine plants such as Nikko daylilies and Shiga irises reach their peak viewing season from July to August.
Take the summer mountain gondola up to the summit of Higashitateyama, at an elevation of around 2,000 meters, and the free-admission Higashitateyama Alpine Botanical Garden will be waiting for you. Centered on alpine plants native to Shiga Kogen, the garden allows visitors to observe seasonal flowers up close.
The best viewing period is generally from July to August. Flowers unique to the highlands, including Nikko daylilies and Shiga irises, come into bloom across the garden. Since it is easy to visit in combination with the gondola operating schedule, it is perfect for those who may not yet feel confident about hiking but still want to see alpine plants.
Please enjoy the flowers in the garden only by looking at them and taking photos. Shiga Kogen is located within a national park, and collecting plants is prohibited. Please follow good manners and enjoy this flower field in the sky.
