Why Skiers from Around the World Stay for One or Two Weeks. The Secret Behind the Enduring Appeal of the Family-Run Diamond Shiga【Diamond Shiga】

In the Ichinose area of Shiga Kogen, there are skiers who return year after year. Some come from overseas and settle in for a week, or even two.

In the morning, they head out to the slopes. In the evening, they return to the hotel, warm up in the large public bath, enjoy dinner, and take a quiet moment in the lounge. The next morning, they step back out onto the snow. For travelers who want a ski trip that feels almost like living in the mountains, Diamond Shiga in Shiga Kogen’s Ichinose area is one of the hotels they choose as their base.

Founded in 1972, Diamond Shiga has been welcoming skiers and travelers in Ichinose for more than 50 years.

Its appeal is not limited to its proximity to the slopes. It is about the location, just about a two-minute walk from the bus stop. The parking area right in front of the hotel. The large public bath and sauna. Meals designed to stay enjoyable even over a five-night stay. And the warm atmosphere of a hotel that has been cared for by a family over the years.

During our interview, the hotel representative spoke about returning guests this way:

“Quite a few guests come back almost as if they are saying, ‘I’m home,’ as if this were their own place.”

Why do skiers from Japan and abroad keep returning to Diamond Shiga? Through the hotel’s history, location, dining, in-house spaces, and family-run approach, we explore the reasons behind its lasting appeal.

Why Ichinose Is Chosen as a Base by Those Who Want to Ski Shiga Kogen for Longer

Shiga Kogen is one of Japan’s leading large-scale snow resorts. According to its official website, the highland area includes 18 ski areas and more than 50 lifts and ropeways. With ski shuttle buses and interconnected slopes, visitors can move between a wide range of ski areas during their stay.

The Ichinose area, where Diamond Shiga is located, sits near the center of Shiga Kogen and serves as a convenient base for longer stays. Accommodation and dining facilities are concentrated nearby, making it a natural fit for ski-focused trips.

In our interview, the representative shared this about long-stay guests from overseas:

“Even if they stay for one or two weeks, there are so many ski areas that they do not get bored.”

On a ski trip, a hotel is not simply a place to sleep. For people skiing over several days, it becomes the base they depart from every morning and return to every evening. The longer the stay, the more the comfort and usability of that hotel shape the overall satisfaction of the trip.

Diamond Shiga has many qualities that make it convenient for extended stays: easy access to the slopes, a location close to the bus stop, parking directly in front of the hotel, a large public bath and sauna, meals that remain enjoyable over multiple nights, a lounge where guests can spend time freely, and a welcoming approach that includes solo travelers. Here, skiing, resting, eating, and relaxing connect naturally.

A Choice Made 50 Years Ago Still Makes the Hotel Convenient Today

Diamond Shiga was founded in 1972. The representative’s family originally operated an inn in Shibu Onsen. From there, they expanded into the Ichinose area of Shiga Kogen, marking the beginning of what is now Diamond Shiga.

When the hotel was first founded, Ichinose was not the only candidate location. Places with hot springs had their own appeal, but the previous generation placed particular importance on ease of movement for guests.

“Here, the bus stop is right nearby, and the parking area is directly in front of us. In terms of location, we were very fortunate.”

On a winter trip, good access has real value. Guests move with skis and boots, walk on snowy roads, and carry luggage. Reducing that burden is an important point when choosing where to stay.

According to the official website, guests arriving by public transportation can take a bus bound for Okushiga Kogen from Yudanaka Station on the Nagano Electric Railway and get off at the “Ichinose Ski Area-mae” bus stop, about a two-minute walk from the hotel. For those arriving by car, having the parking area directly in front of the hotel also provides reassurance.

The previous generation’s choice of Ichinose 50 years ago continues to translate into convenience for today’s skiers.

Dinners Designed to Stay Enjoyable Even Over Five Nights

One of the key factors in the satisfaction of a longer stay is food. For a one-night stay, a special meal can be enough. But once a stay stretches to three nights, five nights, or a full week, what matters is whether the meals remain enjoyable day after day.

Diamond Shiga has put thought into that point.

“For dinner, we offer a buffet along with five different daily hot pots, so guests staying longer will not have the same main dish for at least five days.”

Dinner combines a buffet of side dishes with a daily hot pot as the main dish. Since the hot pot rotates through five varieties, meals have a sense of change even for guests staying several nights.

At dinner, seating is also assigned. After skiing all day, many guests want to sit down calmly and enjoy a warm meal without fuss. Guests can enjoy hot pot at their own table, while choosing the side dishes they like from the buffet. Dinner here balances the comfort of having a relaxed, settled place to eat with the pleasure of choosing what you want. Breakfast is also served buffet-style, giving skiers a solid start before a full day on the slopes.

A Large Public Bath and Sauna After Skiing: Enjoying Japanese Inn Time

Warming up after skiing is one of the pleasures of winter travel.

Diamond Shiga has large public baths and saunas named Sarusuberi and Waremoko. The baths use spring water from Mount Iwasuge, allowing guests to gently warm their chilled bodies. Bathing is available from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Being able to warm up in the morning bath before heading out is a welcome feature at a winter mountain resort.

During our interview, we also heard an interesting comment about how international guests use the large public bath.

“In the past, many foreign guests used only the shower, but now more of them say they want to use the large public bath.”

A ski trip is not only about the time spent on the slopes. The time spent at the hotel can also become part of the travel memory. The large public bath and sauna, distinctive features of Japanese-style accommodation, are increasingly becoming part of the stay for both domestic skiers and guests visiting from overseas.

Easy to Stay Alone: Free Time in the Lounge

Diamond Shiga also welcomes solo travelers.

“We accept solo guests, so quite a few people come to stay alone.”

Maybe you want to start early in the morning. Maybe you want to ski your favorite courses again and again. Maybe, when you are tired, you want to return to the hotel without worrying about anyone else’s schedule. Solo ski travel has the appeal of letting you enjoy the mountains at your own pace.

Inside the hotel is Jurīn, a lounge that guests are free to use. During the winter season, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., guests can enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, and Japanese tea brewed with spring water from Mount Iwasuge.

“The lounge around here is a free space, so people end up making friends with all kinds of guests.”

After skiing, guests can rest, read a book, or naturally strike up conversations with others staying at the hotel, including guests from overseas. You can talk with someone if you like, or spend time quietly on your own. That comfortable sense of space makes the hotel pleasant for solo travelers as well as long-stay guests.

A Hotel Some Guests Return to with a Feeling of “I’m Home”

Today, Diamond Shiga is run mainly by a family team: the representative and his wife, together with their daughter and son-in-law. During busy periods, additional staff help keep the winter hotel running.

“It is basically the four of us: my wife and me, and our daughter and her husband.”

Their daughter works in the kitchen, while their son-in-law is in charge of the dining room. Although the hotel is not small, it continues to be run in a way where guests can feel the presence of the family behind it.

Some guests return every season. Some visit several times within a single season. Others come back from overseas. For them, staying here feels less like checking into accommodation and more like coming home. For repeat guests, Diamond Shiga has become that kind of place.

Extended stays require more than facilities and convenience. Guests need to feel at ease. They need to be able to spend time at their own pace. They need an atmosphere that makes them want to return. The accumulation of those qualities is why people continue choosing Diamond Shiga.

Continuing Rather Than Expanding: Passing the Hotel to the Next Generation

Diamond Shiga has a history of more than 50 years. During the previous generation, there was even a period when the family operated accommodation businesses in multiple locations. In an era when ski travel was thriving, the business expanded in response to the expectations of the time.

What the current representative values now is passing the hotel on to the next generation in a way that is not overly burdensome.

“When I think about the next generation, I want to make things as light as possible during my time. Otherwise, the people who come next will really struggle.”

Rather than expanding aggressively, he values continuing for the long term. Rather than piling on more than the hotel can carry, he focuses on steadily improving what is already here. The goal is to maintain a place where guests can stay comfortably. Today, Diamond Shiga continues to welcome winter skiers, long-stay guests, solo travelers, and repeat visitors while being run mainly by the family.

For those who want to ski Shiga Kogen over several days, this hotel offers exactly the things that matter.

Why Diamond Shiga Continues to Be Chosen

There is no single reason why Diamond Shiga is chosen by skiers from Japan and abroad.

It is located in Ichinose, a convenient base for enjoying Shiga Kogen’s vast ski terrain. It is about a two-minute walk from the bus stop, with parking right in front of the hotel. Its meals are designed to stay enjoyable over multiple nights. It has large public baths and saunas where guests can warm up after skiing. It offers a lounge where solo travelers can spend time comfortably. And above all, it has the warm atmosphere of a hotel cared for by a family.

Convenience and comfort. The practical qualities needed for a ski trip, and the human warmth that makes you want to return. Because Diamond Shiga offers both, there are guests who come back saying, “I’m home.”

If you would like to stay a little longer in Shiga Kogen, spend several days skiing from Ichinose, find a hotel where solo travelers can feel at ease, or choose accommodation close to the slopes with enjoyable food and baths, Diamond Shiga is one hotel worth keeping on your list.
