As the trekking and flower-walking season begins, the Shiga Kogen Tourism Association is calling on visitors to be cautious around wild animals. Here are key points for keeping a safe distance from Asian black bears and Japanese macaques while enjoying the highlands safely.
Shiga Kogen is located at the heart of Joshin’etsukogen National Park and is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including Asian black bears. With the walking season now underway, the Shiga Kogen Tourism Association is urging visitors to take precautions around wild animals.
To help avoid encounters with bears, visitors are advised to carry items that make sound, such as bear bells or radios; take extra care in the early morning, at night, and during bad weather; and avoid walking alone by traveling in groups whenever possible. If you do encounter a bear, do not shout, throw objects, or run away. Instead, keep your eyes on the bear and slowly back away.
When it comes to Japanese macaques, do not approach them, do not make eye contact, and never feed them. Feeding wild monkeys makes them more accustomed to humans and can lead to accidents. Please also take all food scraps and trash home with you to avoid affecting the local ecosystem.
If you see or encounter a wild animal, please report it to your accommodation or to the Shiga Kogen Tourism Association at 0269-34-2404. Sharing information helps improve safety throughout the area.
